Out-of-state marriage license valid in MN?

MN marriage license
Question:

Hello Rev. Coleman,

My fiancée and I have been trying to figure out whether an out-of-state marriage license will be valid to use for our wedding ceremony in Minneapolis, MN some time in June 2011. I saw that you had some info on how to get a MN marriage license, and wondered if you could help with a question. I am in Austin, Texas and my fiancée is in New York. We are planning to obtain our marriage license in Austin, TX in May 2011. Can you please let me know whether we can get marry in Minneapolis with a Texas marriage license?

Thank you in advance!

Texas Groom

Answer:

Good afternoon, TG,

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

I’m sorry, but a Texas marriage license can’t be used for a Minnesota wedding. In order to get married in Minnesota, you’d need to get a Minnesota marriage license (you both have to apply in person, and there’s a 5-day waiting period).

I’m sorry, this isn’t the answer you were looking for… At least now, you know what’s up, though.

Best wishes for your wedding!

Warmly,

Rev. Tomkin
