I think we want to include a unity candle in our wedding ceremony. We are just a little concerned that it will blow out, considering the breezes we sometimes get in Minnesota. Have you seen anyone have a unity candle in an outdoor wedding ceremony?

Candles outside can be problematic fo
r a wedding ceremony, as you said, because of wind. While you can’t exactly have windproof Unity Candles, I’ve found the best solution, which works pretty well, is to use a glass sheath around each candle (often called a “hurricane globe”), such as the ones here, from Crate and Barrel. Only two candles are shown here, while you will need three – two taper candles (to light the middle candle), and one middle one (the Unity Candle). Crate and Barrel has different sizes of glass candle sheaths like these, and they just have to be taller than each candle.
- The two taper candles don’t have to be in a glass sheath, although that can be nice, too.
- If the glass sheath for the two taper candles is tall enough, you can even place each taper candle into a candle holder, and place it the glass globe.
How you arrange the Unity candle/taper candles/glass sheaths really depends on the size of each item, but at least with this information, you’re now on the right track.
